Title: Nova Scotia Seniors – Senior Friendly Indoor Activities

Posted Sep 14, 2016

September 2016

It has been a wonderful summer weather-wise, plenty of great days to get out and about and become a tourist in our very own province.

Now that Winter is on its way, do not turn back into a couch potato.  We all have the tendency to batten down the hatches, curl up in ball and hibernate until Spring. We are not bears and we must remain active through the colder months. Take a Vitamin D hit and out you go!

Regular physical activity is key to keeping healthy. If you are not up to hitting the slopes, then do some cross country skiing or snow-shoeing, hiking  (good boots), skating and we all know the dog still needs to be walked. Take the grand kids tobogganing and then for Hot Chocolate (yumm!).

Okay, okay!  So being outdoors in sub-zero weather is not for you… There are all the usual indoor activities. The gym, the Wii, dancing, the pool, the mall walk but… have I got a fun game for in mind for all ages!!

Pickle-ball… yup… Pickle-ball! This game was invented with the idea in mind of being fun for every member of the family, from young ones to seniors. It’s been around for a while but it’s only coming to be known lately.

Court and Gear

Pickle-ball is played on a badminton-sized court (lined differently) with special Pickle-ball paddles. The ball is similar to a wiffle ball (slightly smaller). The lower net and wiffle ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities and still allows those more competitive players to compete at higher levels.

Rules of the Game

In tennis, and most net sports, games are won and lost by the power of the serve. In Pickle-ball, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. This opens the game to more players (of different abilities) and extends play for added fun.

There is a Pickle-ball Association in NS  and if you would like to have a sneak peek as to how it’s played, go to this video (skip the ad if you like). The association will tell you where you can go to play, how to join up and start up the fun,… and it does look like fun. It can be played indoors and outdoors too.

No excuses, now… do not sleep through our Winter after working so hard to get in shape this summer. Start a league and take your friends and/or family with you

Mostly, have lots of fun!
