Nova Scotia Seniors: The Importance of Strong Online Passwords
Posted Aug 31, 2016So how can you sort it all out and have a password that is secure, and easy to remember?
Creating strong passwords help keep your personal information safe online ensuring that no one is able to access personal details such as banking information.
Tips for Creating a Strong Password:
- Have at least eight characters long, preferably more
- Include a combination of letters, numbers and punctuation (like *or $ or #)
- Include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters
- Not be an actual word
- Not use your real name, username or personal information, such as your birthday, license plate number or address
A good password idea can be to start with a phrase or words of something memorable to you, such as “FamilyFirst”. Then you can use a series of punctuation and numbers to change some of the letters to make it a password only you would know!
“Family First” becomes “F@m1lyF1r$st” and just like that you have a secure password!
Remembering Your Password
By now, hopefully you have a few strong passwords. The tricky part is remembering them so you can actually access your accounts.
It’s OK to write down your passwords to remember them, but make sure you hide the paper well. Here are a few places you could write down your password in case you forget it:
- In a cookbook on the page of your favorite recipe
- On the page of your favorite book
- On the back of a picture
- On a piece of paper in your wallet
- On a piece of paper that you lock in a safe
