Nova Scotia Seniors – Choosing the right CaregiverPosted Apr 25, 2016
OK… You’ve decided to get homecare in place for yourself or a loved one. How do you choose between all the homecare companies out there?
If your care is government provided, they will choose your homecare provider as only certain companies have the contracts for government care. Always Home Homecare often supplements and works around the hours given to you by the public service. This gives you the control to decide the amount of hours that works for you and your family. Private homecare allows you to manage the entire process including who comes into your home.
What should you look for in a homecare company and its workers? Well… here are the top questions asked at Always Home Homecare – caring for our Halifax Seniors and surrounding areas.
What kind of care can be provided?
Homecare companies can do many things, such as personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation, from a single post-surgical visit all the way to live-in care (depending on the company)
How much care do I or does my loved one need?
It depends on how housebound or ill you are. There are usually a minimum number of hours required per visit – usually 3 or 4. At Always Home Homecare, we offer a three-hour minimum visit. We do make allowances in certain cases, so please call and ask us how we can help.
At Always Home, we encourage clients to make the most of our time with them. Ask the caregiver to make a meal, pass the vacuum or simply to prepare some tea and share some companionship time with the client.
Is the company a Registered Veterans Prepared Provider?
Simply ask. If they are, they will help advise you on how to proceed with DVA and get in touch with an area counsellor. If you or your loved one is a veteran, DVA will set up a visit and tell you how much care you are entitled to and YOU STILL CAN CHOOSE the company from their list of providers. Bonus: you don’t have to pay for it.
What do I do if I’m not happy with my caregiver?
I promise you that if you have a problem with your care worker that the company you choose would much rather make a change and send someone who is compatible rather than lose your business
This is key – you must call the company right away if you are unhappy. We are sad at Always Home, to find that a client decided to pull business because they were unhappy with the caregiver sent and we hadn’t heard a single word about it until it got to that point. Don’t be afraid to call or worried about the caregiver – we want you to be comfortable in your own home.
No, we do not fire the caregiver because of incompatibility – we place him/her in with another family who may be a better fit.
Do I get the same caregiver every time?
We try our best! If you have 1 to 3 visits per week and are a little flexible, we should have no problem with that request. Anything over that, we try our best but cannot make a promise. That being said, we try to keep familiar faces – so you would have maybe 2 or 3 (depending on the number of shifts required) of the same faces coming over the week
How do we know your caregivers are honest?
In caring for our seniors of Nova Scotia, we take the responsibility very seriously.
Not only do we check references thoroughly, we perform criminal reference checks and vulnerable sector checks annually and do a complete vetting before placing them in our clients’ homes. Does this provide perfect security? No security is perfect but you know that due diligence is performed and a quality company will be bonded in the event of any mishaps.
Do your homework in searching for homecare for yourself or a loved one. Many of our seniors have dementia and you want to be sure you have the right company caring for them – a company whose workers are empathetic, soothing, reliable and patient. We try our best to match personalities so the bond will be definite.
Ask the questions to the Client Services Department and they will be happy to answer them for you. Find out what you need from a few companies and then make your choice. You will be happy you did.
