Recognizing When Home Care Elves are Needed – Holiday Respite Care Services

Posted Nov 26, 2015

Holiday-Respite-Care‘Tis the season once more, and that means that holiday respite care services may be needed.

As we approach Christmas day, many families around the province are busy purchasing gifts, and completing their Christmas baking. All of this hustle and bustle is in preparation for the day that Old Saint Nick decides to shimmy down our chimneys and leave behind his magical Christmas joy – right? The holidays can be a stressful time of year for some, and no matter how much planning and preparation in advance is done – there never seems to be enough hours in a day.

There are some who are busy making lists of stocking stuffer ideas, and then there are those who are busy scheduling Dad’s next Dialysis appointment. There are some who are rushing out to get the latest eggnog latte, and others who are rushing out to make sure Mom’s walk has been shoveled clear of snow and ice.

Many treat the holiday season as a mini-vacation from the stress of everyday living; the kids are on their holiday breaks, and the boss has been in a cheery mood ever since the Chirstmas tunes started playing. For others, the stress of caring for an aging parent can be a full-time job in itself.

We, at Always Home Homecare see both sides of the holiday season. The stressed out daughter turned caregiver with a mother showing the early signs of dementia. The son kept up at night worrying about his father’s new tendency to wander during the nights. The family members turned care providers are sometimes referred to as the second victims when dealing with an especially deteriorative illness. They can experience fatigue, emotional stress, and even physical stress as a result of their position. Often times they will neglect their own state of health, when personal time and respite services should really be implemented.

We have trained professionals who provide respite care services in Halifax and surrounding areas year round.
